Which historic Austin mini train was this South Lamar condo project just renamed after?

Many Austinites know the name Zephyr from the beloved kiddie train that for years chugged through one of Austin's favorite playgrounds, Zilker Park.

Now, an upscale condominium project being built on South Lamar Boulevard will bear the name Zephyr, after the Zilker Zephyr train. The Zilker Zephyr stopped service in 2019 but is due to be replaced by a new miniature train named after the original train dating to 1961, the Zilker Eagle.

Construction is well underway on the five-story condo project, which Austin-based Pearlstone Partners is developing at South Lamar Boulevard and Bluebonnet Lane. The building will have 182 units and is expected to be completed by the second quarter of next year. Formerly called Montage South Lamar, the project broke ground in March 2023.

Zephyr to bring 182 new condos to South Austin

Developers of Zephyr, a condo project that just broke ground in South Austin, are wasting no time getting the building's 182 units on the market. Pearlstone Partners and Prospect Real Estate announced Monday that its sales office is open for business.

Zephyr Condos, Not Montage, Build a Zilker Homage on South Lamar

The building’s new name, Zephyr, is a welcome upgrade due to its connection with the nearby Zilker Park. You may recall that prior to this whole Zilker Eagle debacle, the kiddie train at the park was known as the Zilker Zephyr. I would have preferred to keep that name, perhaps out of the same arbitrary sense of local nostalgia that makes people mad about new condo buildings replacing a used car lot, so it’s nice to see the spirit of the Zephyr live on here in some small way.

Pearlstone Partners is doubling down on its commitment to growing in Austin.
